Myrtle Beach...here we are!
Yesterday was the first day of our summer vacation. This time, we are trying someplace new, Myrtle Beach. We went to Panama City Beach last year and enjoyed the beach and pool, but we really wished there had been more to do there, like there is in the mountains. So, we are trying Myrtle Beach because it looks like a great combination of the two to us.We left home after church on Sunday and were making such great time the entire way up that we decided to just drive all the way to Myrtle Beach rather than stopping at some point on the way. We checked in around 11:30 local time, I think. Our room is very small, but we move into a two bedroom today at some point. I know the kids will be ready to have a bedroom instead of a sofa bed!
When we got up yesterday, we headed to the beach. The beach here is very different than the ones on the Gulf Coast that we are used to. First of all, the sand is much darker than on the Gulf Coast. But, while it's not nearly as beautiful, the beach is great for playing and laying around. There is a large expanse of hard packed sand here which makes for easy walking and for laying on the beach without bringing home a pound of sand in your bathing suit bottoms! Maury got to work on a sand castle right away.
Lizzie and I walked up the beach a little bit after we got settled in. She was fascinated with the tiny shells that bury themselves when they get dragged in by the surf. We didn't get very far up the beach before she wanted to go back and show Maury and Steve. When we got back, Steve and Maury were out in the ocean playing in the waves. Lizzie wanted to join them. We all went out for awhile.
The kids played in the sand for a little bit while Steve and I just enjoyed the perfect day. The weather is just great...temperature around 80 probably while we were out yesterday. Just warm enough!
We spent some time at the pool after that and then came up so we could clean up and go get some lunch. Being the great mom and wife that I am, I agreed to go to Golden Corral once while we were here and so that is where we went. Yuck. Oh, well. We then went to WalMart to get some drinks and some beach stuff and also picked up a pizza to eat in for dinner. I took the kids back to the pool for a little bit last night (the pool was completely shaded by then, which is nice to know...a sunscreen reprieve each late afternoon!) and then we had pizza and turned in early.
Today we will try out some new beach toys, including body boards, and maybe one of the fun touristy things we looked at the brochures for (seaside amusement parks, SkyWheel, dolphin watching boat rides).
